“But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” James 2:20. Many an individual claim they’re saved yet continue in their same sinful lifestyle without any visible change. We aren’t God, we can’t see into the hearts of others. We can only see visible outward signs that give us any indication whether or not a person is a believer. James says without works faith is dead. Our works are the result of our love for God and they should come instinctively after conversion. As believers, born from God we should be passionate, even driven, by a desire to please God and to give our lives to Him.
So how do we know whether or not our faith is dead? Honestly, a professing believer who is living a lifestyle contrary to God’s will may not even care whether or not their faith is dead. Our faith in Jesus Christ needs to be a living faith. It’s not to be misplaced out in the world somewhere; it’s placed in a living God. What’s that mean, living faith? “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.” James 2:15-17. Jesus tells us to love one another but if we show no compassion toward others, or very little for that matter, or if we can’t seem to get motivated enough to help our fellow man then our faith may very well be dead.
Many Christians are non-participants in God’s plan for humankind. They just aren’t interested in fulfilling God’s commandments. What that means is even though they’ve made the statement that they’ve repented of their sins and asked for forgiveness, and say they’ve asked Jesus Christ to be the savior of their lives, there’s no visible change between their current status and their pre-conversion state. This is where James chapter 2 comes into play in all our lives. If there is no visible difference in a person’s life after the conversion experience, what kind of faith is that?
After conversion Christians should begin to look at the world with a whole new perspective. As we become more and more familiar with God’s word we begin to see the evil that’s been surrounding us much more clearly. We begin to eliminate the baggage we’ve been carrying and are then free to pursue God’s will for our lives. By baggage I mean being stuck with the mindset of mass accumulation, such as materialism. Even attributes such as self-reliance, pride, haughtiness, etc., are all hindrances to our relationship with God. These hindrances should be significantly reduced at some point after conversion so a believers life will become completely devoted to adhering to God’s will.
Now that our blinders have been removed we need to tell others about our new relationship with God, and the saving grace only obtained through Jesus Christ. This becomes our works which God has ordained as a part of our new life in Christ. All of our works need to bring glory to God and it should be our good pleasure to help others to come to the saving knowledge of the Gospel of Christ. The truth is the world has been blinded, and because of our new ability to see the truth we can play a big part in God’s plan just by witnessing to the lost. The Holy Spirit will do the rest by removing the blinders of all those who want to see the truth.
Our conversion/rebirth puts us forever in the hands of Jesus Christ, and as such it’s essential that our actions and even our conversations produce good works. The more we grow in our Christian walk the more we will accomplish for the Kingdom of God, and we will continue to grow as we study His word and give ourselves wholly to Him.
All believers are admonished to spread the Gospel. The commandment wasn’t meant for just a select few. So, do we spread the Gospel as commanded? Preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ is a huge part of what James is speaking about as works. You see, works is doing what God wants of us, and even commands us to do. Please don’t misunderstand James’ admonition of works based faith. James is speaking of a believer’s life after justification.
“Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure,” Philippians 2:12. This is another easily misunderstood scripture verse. Paul’s statement of “work out your own salvation” means that after conversion we need to be diligent as we go about our Fathers business. Continuing day by day in God’s will, and working out our own salvation is God’s will for our lives. It’s obedience to God that Paul is speaking about. Again, works aren’t what saves us, but works will certainly follow our born again experience.
We should see evidence of works in every area of believer’s lives. We need to activate the awesome salvation God freely gave us. By activate I mean we are to involve ourselves with sharing God’s Gospel, activate it. Paul, like James, is actually bringing the same concept into view, albeit a slightly different approach, but both approaches are completely complementary of each other. If there is no activity in a believer’s life, activity associated with spreading the Gospel, feeding the hungry, basically showing others the love of Christ, then as James explains, our faith is dead.
“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also,” James 2:26. God has given us an awesome advantage over the lost in that He has allowed those who follow Him to see things the lost cannot. When believers read God’s inerrant word they are blessed with understanding, and they gain insight into God’s nature. Believer’s advantage is that they now know God, and since we know God and we know what He expects of His own, we must train ourselves to do the works He has assigned to us. Occasionally believers fail to be attentive to God’s will and must be admonished to continue to seek His will. Faithful mature believers will apply themselves to accomplishing that task.
Many reading this commentary will conclude by this point that I am advocating salvation through works. No, I’m not. God offered His Son to die for our sins. We accept His free gift and are then justified through our faith. “The just shall live by faith,” Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, Hebrews 10:38. And in Habakkuk 2:4 we’re told “The just shall live by his faith. Clearly we live by faith, we promote the Gospel through and by our faith, and we exist as believers by faith through God’s grace. Once we have the Holy Spirit sealed within us we are completely secure in God’s hands. “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:13-14.
What we do after our becoming justified (born again) for God’s Kingdom is what James considers as works. We are adhering to God’s will by following His commands. If believers aren’t interested in following all of God’s commands, well then James says our faith is dead.
James’ admonition that faith without works is dead isn’t a contradiction of the other scriptures that plainly state we are saved by grace through faith, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast,” Ephesians 2: 8, 9. But what he is saying is once we’re born of God our works will be the natural progression in a believer’s life. What you can take away from all this is if a person shows no interest in following Christ even after conversion then they are probably living a lie. On the other hand there are many who do a ton of works thinking that’s what puts them in a right relationship with God. No sir! Get right with God first then the attitude of working for God’s Kingdom will manifest itself in your life like rivers of flowing water.
James and Paul aren’t saying anything we don’t already know. To believers, doing the works of God is a blessing. Being works oriented is our biblical manifesto. Works are simply our marching orders. A truly born again believer “in Christ” will find no drudgery in following God’s will. As we go about our daily routine it is a natural occurrence for believers to be the light of Christ. Simply put, works are the believer’s pleasure and as such their accomplishments are assured.
Jesus tells us that not everyone who calls Him Lord is in line for any inheritance. “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21. Doing the will of the Father, the Son tells us, is essential for admittance into the Kingdom of Heaven. “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?” Matthew 7:22. Here we see that many will say they did many wonderful works for the Lord but as we’ve already learned works aren’t what saves us. “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matthew 7:23.
Faith without works is dead and faith in Christ is what we need for salvation. Jesus makes it plain to all those who have eyes to see and ears to hear how we enter Heaven. It’s a yes, a done deal, for all those who have placed their faith and trust in Him. All those who do the will of the Father will be saved. What is the will of the Father? “Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” John 6:29. We see from all this that faith and works are associated in that one is dead without the other. It’s plain what kind of Christians we are if we remain in our comfort zone and never embark on a path that involves adhering to God’s will.
“Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.” James 2:19. James tells us that without works our faith is the same as demons who believe and tremble. Such a faith cannot save anyone, because there is no verifiable works that would naturally accompany a saving faith. Where faith abounds there is the fruit of the Spirit which is always accompanied by works. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” Galatians 5:22-25

Finding Gog
Those who labor to understand the nuances of the battle described in Ezekiel 38-39 quickly identify two major puzzles. One is the timing of the battle and the other is the identity of Gog, from Magog. Suffice it to say here that almost no scholar, certainly none I'm aware of, believes the battle of Ezekiel 38-39 has already taken place. Some believe it will occur just before the beginning of Daniel's 70th Week, while others believe Ezekiel is actually describing the Battle of Armageddon, which would put it at the end of the Great Tribulation. But all place it sometime in our future.
In my opinion, there are several reasons why Ezekiel 38 can't be part of the Armageddon scenario. First, only some nations are involved in Ezekiel 38. For example, Saudi Arabia and Western Europe are said to be on the sidelines observing and others you would expect to see, like Egypt and Jordan, are not mentioned at all, although both appear later on. But Zechariah 12:3 says that in preparation for the Battle of Armageddon all the nations of the Earth will come against Jerusalem.
Second, how is Israel going to burn the left over weapons for 7 years as Ezekiel 39:9 indicates unless there are 7 years left in which to burn them? Rev. 21:24. says the nations will walk by the light of the New Jerusalem in the Millennium, so they won't need fuel for energy then. And then you have Ezekiel 38:11 telling us that Israel will be a peaceful and unsuspecting people when the Moslem coalition strikes. Could that be possible near the end of the Great Tribulation when all the nations are gathering to attack? I don't think so.
But most importantly, Daniel's 70th week can't start until Israel is back in covenant with God and the battle of Ezekiel 38 is what causes the covenant to be re-instated. (Ezek. 39:22) Armageddon comes at the end of Daniel's 70th week, not the beginning.
As for Gog and Magog, the first thing to note is that while Magog is listed in Genesis 10, Gog is not. The list of 70 names in Genesis 10 is often called the Table of Nations because each of the men named there was the original ancestor of an ethnic group that grew to become a nation of people. For instance, Magog was the 2nd son of Japeth, one of Noah's three sons, and bore the children who in time became known to the ancient world as the Scythians. They lived in central Asia and are believed to be the forefathers of today's Russians. Many historical references support this view. For example, Josephus Flavius wrote "Magog founded the Magogians, thus named after him, but who were by the Greeks called Scythians." And in some ancient Arabic documents, the Great Wall of China is called the Ramparts of Gog and Magog. It was built to keep the Scythians out of China.
So while the Russian people of today are likely descended from Magog, there is no such biological connection for Gog to either Magog or any other ethnic group. There is an unrelated mention of a man named Gog, a grandson of Reuben, in 1 Chronicles 5:4 but there doesn't seem to be any connection between him and the land of Magog either. Clearly, while Magog refers to the millions of his descendants in today's Russia, Gog remains a single individual.
Some say he's a king or leader, and in a real sense I think that's true but I don't believe he's of the human variety. The time spanned by his three appearances in scripture make that impossible.
The first one is in the first verse of Amos 7, but you have to be reading Amos from the Septuigent translation to see it. There, Gog is identified as a king, but of a swarm of locusts. To further shroud him in mystery Proverbs 30:27 states that locusts have no king, and observers of locust swarms agree that no obvious leader directs them, as a queen would direct a hive of bees for example. The swarm of locusts led by Gog in Amos 7:1-2 was symbolic of a judgment that was to come upon the Northern Kingdom, but the Lord relented because of Amos' intercession.
(This hint also lends insight to another appearance of locusts, by the way. I’m referring to the one in Revelation 9, where a swarm of locusts comes out of the Abyss to afflict those on Earth who lack the seal of God on their foreheads. These locusts have a king named Abaddon in the Hebrew or Appolyon in the Greek. Here again, the Proverbs passage would indicate that these locusts are of supernatural origin like the ones in Amos 7, not ordinary locusts.)
The next time Gog's mentioned is in Ezekiel 38:1, where he is called by name as the leader of a coalition of what are now primarily Moslem nations attacking Israel. His final mention comes from the Book of Revelation where he again leads the people from Magog against the Lord's army at the end of the Millennium (Rev. 20:8).
Even if you're among those who place the battle of Ezekiel 38 at the end of the Great Tribulation, the span of time between Gog's last two biblical appearances is at least 1000 years, and while I believe that some born in that era will have long life spans, there isn't any indication that natural humans born before the Millennium begins will live to see its end. This is especially true of God's enemies, since all surviving unbelievers are removed from Earth at the beginning of our Lord's reign.
So I've come to the conclusion that Gog is a supernatural figure. The Bible clearly states that behind the human seats of government stand supernatural figures manipulating the thoughts and actions of the world's leaders. These figures are in Satan's employ, helping in his effort to wrest ownership of Planet Earth from its Creator. Gog is at least the supernatural figure behind the throne of Russia, and perhaps is even Satan's counterpart to the Archangel Michael, who commands the Lord's armies.
In Daniel 10:13 Michael is identified as one of the Lord's chief princes who in 536 BC came to Daniel's aid in a supernatural struggle with the Prince of Persia, a nation barely emerging on the world scene having conquered Babylon just three years earlier. At its conclusion Michael told Daniel that he'd soon be battling the Prince of Greece, a nation that didn't even exist at the time. In Daniel 12:1 we're told he'll protect Israel at the end of the age. And in Rev 12:7 he's seen leading the angelic host in a great battle in heaven when Satan is defeated there and cast down to Earth at the outset of the Great Tribulation. Michael is clearly a supernatural warrior leaping across the pages of history in defense of the Lord's interests. It makes sense that Satan would have a military commander leading his forces as well, since everything he does seems to mirror the actions of his Creator. With his multiple mentions in Scripture and the long span of time between appearances, Gog could easily be this commander.
Only time will tell if this view is correct. But one of the great advantages of living in our day is that we won't have long to wait till we find out. You can almost hear the footsteps of the Messiah.

Islamic Radicals God's Solution
The world is rightly alarmed at the threat of the Islamic radicals.The fundamentalist elements of this false religion may not be the majority, but they control a scary multitude. According to recent polls conducted by a reputable organization, approximately seven percent (7%) of Muslims worldwide are radical, support suicide bombers and are committed to an Islamic domination of the world. With 1.3 billion Muslims worldwide that 7% represents 91 million, and at least 117,500 of these radicals live in America. Every one of the 91 million Muslims are potential candidates to be used to attack, kill, and eliminate humans that stand in their way. What an awesome fact to go to bed with every night!
A massive effort is underway by leading radical Muslims to guarantee that their Islamic forces possess a nuclear arsenal. We must understand that the only thing protecting Israel and America at this very moment is our massive military power. Within our military circles there also exists a powerful and capable intelligence network. It’s important for the intelligent organization to tap telephones and gather information from every available source. You should be thankful for their ability to disrupt planned attacks.
Still, if there was not – above all of the military and intelligent abilities — a Sovereign God that controls every final act of mankind, we would still be hopeless. This earth is the Lord’s and He will have the final word on how this scary world ends the present age.That does not mean that suffering and sorrows will all be eliminated. Every aborted baby, every act of adultery or fornication, and every same-sex act or marriage will be adjudicated in judgment. Sin -- unconfessed and unforsaken sins -- must be judged. Every single act of sin that is not purified and cleansed by the Blood of Christ will be purified by judgment. Great sorrows are clearly on the horizons.
But Our Heavenly Father will have the last word. I believe the War of Gog and Magog will occur right before the Rapture or immediately after the Rapture. This war will affect the Islamic world and every individual that believes in this religion. They have been promised that the twelfth Jman is soon to appear. He is their messiah and promises to establish a One World Kingdom ruled by the laws of the Koran. This teaching is supposedly believed by all 1.3 billion Muslims, not just the radical elements. The clash between this Islamic One World Order and the Western version of a One World Order must occur at some moment.
When you understand these two world views that basically dominate the present earth, you can understand why “One Worlders” in the West are determined to succeed ahead of Islam’s mad plan. Thank God that the prophecies of the Bible have promised a third alternative to the first two plans. There will be a One World Order and it will be worldwide and breathtaking. Jesus Christ will lead His army of glorified saints and we will establish a peaceful world of righteousness and prosperity. I am grateful that the Bible does not leave us in a fog. We have hope that is sure and unfailing.
God’s perfect revelation has left us a prophetic picture of the coming end to both the Islamic and Western plan. First, our Eternal God will deal with the Islamic plan for an “Islamic One World Order” and then He will deal with the Western plan for a “One World Order.”Both of these massive efforts to control the world and rule it for their god will end in Northern Israel. Also, the coming spiritual kingdom will be centered in the Land of Promise, Israel and Jerusalem. No wonder Christians are commanded to pray for the “Peace of Jerusalem.”
Ezekiel prophesied on the bank of the river in Babylon as his heart panted for the rolling hills of Judea. By the powers of God’s Holy Spirit, he saw the future clash in his homeland of a massive army to be destroyed by Divine intervention. His words are most revealing, “After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them. Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee” (Ezekiel 38:8-9). This prophet of God gave the exact details of this great army marching on Israel.
This revelation names the geographical area and the nations that will be a part of this attack. Every description is clear to show that this is an attack by the Islamic world.It is led by Iran, which was the first country named. The Spirit said, “Persia (Iran), Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee” (Ezekiel 38:5-6). The Spirit named a geographical area that fits perfectly with Russia and other Northern powers. “Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal” (Ezekiel 38:2-3).
This army could act with only the need of a few weeks to mobilize. They are probably talking in secret even as I write. When this Islamic Army marches, it will be awesome. As these nations gather somewhere north of Israel, probably in the southern tier of the former USSR territories, the world will think that we are on the verge of annihilation.The media will go ballistic. Politicians will gather at strategic locations amid a mad rush to defuse the coming storm. Bomb shelters will be prepared over much of the world.

Every single act of sin that is not purified and cleansed by the Blood of Christ will be purified by judgment. Great sorrows are clearly on the horizons.
But Our Heavenly Father will have the last word. I believe the War of Gog and Magog will occur right before the Rapture or immediately after the Rapture. This war will affect the Islamic world and every individual that believes in this religion. They have been promised that the twelfth Jman is soon to appear. He is their messiah and promises to establish a One World Kingdom ruled by the laws of the Koran. This teaching is supposedly believed by all 1.3 billion Muslims, not just the radical elements. The clash between this Islamic One World Order and the Western version of a One World Order must occur at some moment.
When you understand these two world views that basically dominate the present earth, you can understand why “One Worlders” in the West are determined to succeed ahead of Islam’s mad plan. Thank God that the prophecies of the Bible have promised a third alternative to the first two plans. There will be a One World Order and it will be worldwide and breathtaking. Jesus Christ will lead His army of glorified saints and we will establish a peaceful world of righteousness and prosperity. I am grateful that the Bible does not leave us in a fog. We have hope that is sure and unfailing.
God’s perfect revelation has left us a prophetic picture of the coming end to both the Islamic and Western plan. First, our Eternal God will deal with the Islamic plan for an “Islamic One World Order” and then He will deal with the Western plan for a “One World Order.”Both of these massive efforts to control the world and rule it for their god will end in Northern Israel. Also, the coming spiritual kingdom will be centered in the Land of Promise, Israel and Jerusalem. No wonder Christians are commanded to pray for the “Peace of Jerusalem.”
Ezekiel prophesied on the bank of the river in Babylon as his heart panted for the rolling hills of Judea. By the powers of God’s Holy Spirit, he saw the future clash in his homeland of a massive army to be destroyed by Divine intervention. His words are most revealing, “After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them. Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee” (Ezekiel 38:8-9). This prophet of God gave the exact details of this great army marching on Israel.
This revelation names the geographical area and the nations that will be a part of this attack. Every description is clear to show that this is an attack by the Islamic world.It is led by Iran, which was the first country named. The Spirit said, “Persia (Iran), Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee” (Ezekiel 38:5-6). The Spirit named a geographical area that fits perfectly with Russia and other Northern powers. “Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal” (Ezekiel 38:2-3).
This army could act with only the need of a few weeks to mobilize. They are probably talking in secret even as I write. When this Islamic Army marches, it will be awesome. As these nations gather somewhere north of Israel, probably in the southern tier of the former USSR territories, the world will think that we are on the verge of annihilation.The media will go ballistic. Politicians will gather at strategic locations amid a mad rush to defuse the coming storm. Bomb shelters will be prepared over much of the world.

No One Knows The Day or The Hour
There are two popular phrases people use in connection with the End Times to discourage speculation about just when the Rapture might take place. One is “like a thief in the night”, and the other is “no one knows the day or the hour”.
It's been suggested from time to time that I'm sometimes “overly specific” in my teaching on the subject of End Times prophecy (even though I've never proposed either a day or an hour) so I've undertaken a study of these two phrases to see if I'm guilty as charged.
Let me say from the outset that I don't believe the day or hour of the Rapture can be known in advance by anyone on Earth because I don't believe it's set to happen on any specific day or at any specific hour. I believe it's set to happen when a specific number of born again believers is reached, and I base that conclusion on my understanding of Romans 11:25.
I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.
There are two Greek words in this verse that lend critical support to a proper understanding. The first is translated "full number". It's a nautical term that describes the pre-determined number of sailors necessary to operate a ship. Until the ship had its full number of crew members, it could not sail. This is why ship captains sometimes got unsuspecting men drunk and kidnapped them late at night and then set sail immediately. And the second, translated "come in" is also a nautical term that described the ship's arrival at its intended destination.
By using these terms, Paul was saying that the hardening of Israel's heart will not be fully removed until the Church reaches its pre-determined number and has been taken to heaven. There's nothing arbitrary about God's action here. He has already determined the number and will take the Church to its intended destination as soon as that number is reached. But as far as I can tell no one on Earth knows either the full number or the current number. All we can know is that we'll be Raptured when the full number of Gentiles has come in and it could literally happen on any given day. Then we'll disappear, the blinders will come off Israel and the 70th Week will commence.
Now, back to the topic at hand. What do these two phrases mean and are they intended to discourage speculation about the timing of the Rapture?
Like A Thief
This phrase appears 4 times in the New Testament. Let's look at each one and see what it's telling us.
Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. (1 Thes. 5:1-4)
This is Paul's only use of the phrase. It's clear He was speaking of the day of the Lord, and that while it will come as a surprise to unbelievers, events leading up to it should not surprise us. He made no mention of the Rapture here.
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. (2 Peter 3:10)
Here's Peter's only use of the phrase, and again the reference is to the End Time Judgments, not to the Rapture.
Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. (Rev. 3:3)
"Behold, I come like a thief! Blessed is he who stays awake and keeps his clothes with him, so that he may not go naked and be shamefully exposed." (Rev. 16:15)
John used the phrase twice, both times quoting the Lord. In Rev. 3:3 He was criticizing the Church in Sardis, who in my opinion represents the mainline Protestants of today. He was reminding them that they've gotten away from His word and had better wake up and get back into it. Otherwise they won't know when He will come to them. Notice the wording. In the Rapture He comes for us, not to us, and we meet Him in the air. The people He's talking to will not go in the Rapture, and if they don't wake up, even the 2nd Coming will take them by surprise. (In verse 4 we see that not everyone in Sardis is asleep. There are a few among them who will be ready for the Rapture and will walk with Him in robes of white.)
In Rev. 16:15 the world is well into the Great Tribulation, so the Lord's warning is for Tribulation believers who will be responsible for keeping themselves saved during the most terrifying and dangerous time the world has ever known. When used symbolically, as it is here, clothing always stands for righteousness, and tribulation believers will be responsible for maintaining theirs.
Day and Hour
Now we'll look at that other popular phrase, “No one knows the day or the hour”.
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. (Matt. 24:36-37)
After the Great Tribulation ends (Matt. 24:29) there will be various signs in the heavens. The sun and moon will go dark and the stars will fall from the sky. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear and all the nations will mourn. After that they'll see Him coming in the clouds with power and great glory, having gathered His elect from all over Heaven to join Him (Matt. 24:30-31). This is confirmed in both Rev. 18:14 and Rev. 19: 11-14. From both the context and the passage itself it's clear that the Lord was referring to the day and hour of the 2nd Coming when He'll be coming with us not for us.
"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. (Matt. 24:42-44)
A few verses later, the Lord repeated the same thought, again in the context of the 2nd Coming.
The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matt. 24:50-51)
And another few verses later. There's no way this can refer to the Rapture because the things He described will not be done to unbelievers at the Rapture. He's speaking of the judgments that follow the 2nd Coming.
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” (Matt. 25:13)
For the fourth time in 28 verses the Lord has said that believers on Earth at the time of the 2nd Coming will not know the day or hour of His return. This one is in the context of the parable of the 10 bridesmaids.
In previous studies I've shown that this parable can't be about the church. The Church is the Bride, not a bridesmaid, there's only one bride, not 10, and the banquet follows the wedding, it doesn't precede it. There's no way a newly married bride can be excluded from her own wedding banquet by a husband who claims he doesn't know her. The parable is about tribulation survivors, 5 of whom are saved and enter the Kingdom and 5 who are not and don't.
What's The Point?
Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.(2 Tim. 4:8)
I've searched the Scriptures in vain trying to find either phrase used in connection with the Rapture. But no where can I find a single verse prohibiting or even discouraging speculation about its timing.
On the contrary, I find that the Lord rebuked the religious leaders of His time for not expecting Him, and in doing so encouraged us to be aware as well. For example, commanded us to understand Daniel's 70 weeks prophecy (Matt. 24:15), He criticized the Pharisees for not being able to read the signs of the times (Matt. 16:2-4), and had Jerusalem destroyed for not recognizing the clearly foretold time of His visitation (Luke 19:41-44). Paul warned us not to let events leading up to the Day of the Lord take us by surprise (1 Thes. 5:4), and as we see above promised that the Lord would award a crown to those who longed for His appearing. How many more reasons do we need?
So where did this idea come from? It appears that some of it can be blamed on theologians who misinterpreted the 2nd Coming parables in Matt. 24 & 25. Apparently they didn't realize that when the Lord coined the phrase, “No one knows the day or hour” He was talking about His 2nd Coming, not the Rapture. But even then it's the disobedient who are caught by surprise in these parables, not the faithful.
Some of it is also due to the fact that for generations church leaders have actively discouraged the study of prophecy for fear that focusing on the Lord's return would make members less enthusiastic about funding their buildings and other Earth centered programs. They developed interpretations that allegorized it all away, making it seem like a fairy tale that no body really believes. I remember when I began to take Bible prophecy seriously my pastors warned me, “Don't become so heavenly minded that you're no earthly good.” These are the scoffers Peter warned about, who say, “Where's the Coming He promised?” (2 Peter 3:4)
But there's still more. Even among pre-trib believers, there is a fear of the rapture because of false doctrines they've been exposed to. The “partial rapture” hypothesis holds that only the truly worthy will be taken, while the rest of the Church will be left behind to clean up their act during some or all of the End times judgments. Others say believers who are not also “overcomers” will be cast into the Outer Darkness at the rapture and excluded from the Millennium. These opinions erode our assurance by concluding that we won't know if we're good enough until it's too late, and make us fearful that we won't qualify.
Then there are the “secular Christians” who don't want their so-called good life to end before they've had a chance to experience it all. Yes, they want the Lord to come, but not yet, not now.
And finally there are those who know that if the Lord came for us today, members of their family and circle of friends would be left behind. They don't want the Lord to come until they know everyone they love will be taken too.
For all these reasons and more, being faced with the idea that the Rapture could be very close is not a comforting idea for lots of believers. Suggesting time frames makes it all seem too real, so they don't like it.
Be Quiet. You'll Scare Them Away.
Well intended people incorrectly say that talking about the End Times frightens new believers, so we shouldn't do it. What if we get them all excited and then it doesn't happen? they ask. It's no secret that the church is populated by a lot of folks who have zeal without knowledge and are easily taken in by anything that promises to either make their life easier (prosperity gospel) or help them escape it altogether (rapture mania). When I came to the Lord in the mid 1980's a book titled 88 Reasons Why The Rapture will take place in 1988 triggered some rapture mania. A year ago the so called “Blood Moon Scenario” had folks looking for the rapture during the fall feasts. And there have been several others in between. In every case a couple of hours of study proved the theories false.
Paul called the Bereans noble because they searched the Scriptures daily to verify what he taught them (Acts 17:11) And that's the Biblically correct response to these claims. It's not to take other verses out of context in an effort to silence them. That only introduces another false teaching. And worse, it encourages the Church to go back to sleep.
When we hear someone suggest or even insist on this time or that one, our response should not be to automatically condemn the person for “date-setting”. It should be to “search the Scriptures daily to see if those things be true” before making a decision about it.
Personally I would much rather see the Church engaged in a lively discussion about the nearness of end times events than to see us trot out the old “No one knows the day or hour” line while sticking our heads back in the sand. What subject is a more important topic for discussion today? And think of all the extra crowns the Lord would have to order. Besides, people don't fall away when dates come and go because if they're saved they can't fall away. If they fall away they weren't saved to begin with. The Lord doesn't miss opportunities to save people because of mistakes men make. He knew those who are His before He laid the Earth's foundations, and promised not to lose even one of us.
So come on Church. Let's get back to our job. The Bible warns us that there'll be false teachers and says they'll be held accountable. But it also admonishes us to do our homework so we'll know one when we see one.
